Most Talkspace plans include asynchronous messaging as a unique and research-backed therapy modality. Asynchronous messaging is a form of therapy conducted through messages exchanged over time. This modality allows clients to communicate with their therapist at any time, setting Talkspace apart from many other online therapy platforms. Asynchronous messaging can be an effective stand-alone treatment and can also complement live therapy sessions, offering a flexible approach to mental health care.
Unlike live chat sessions (instant messaging), responses are not immediate, and therapy-related discussions are the sole focus. Administrative topics, such as scheduling or technical troubleshooting, are not considered part of the asynchronous messaging session.

This format allows therapy to happen in smaller increments, typically over the span of a week or longer. The total time spent reading and responding to messages should be roughly equivalent to that of a live therapy session (or match the duration defined by the applicable billing code for behavioral health plans). For example, 10 minutes of daily engagement over five days approximately equals a traditional 50-minute live session. |
Asynchronous messaging sessions aren't limited to just text; providers and clients can also exchange audio and/or video messages, creating a more personalized and flexible communication experience.
